The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen, said last week in Washington that a nuclear Iran would pose an existential threat to Israel.

Mullen said he would prefer that the U.S. work diplomatically to keep the country from acquiring nuclear weapons, but hinted that should such efforts fail, the U.S. air force and navy could be put into action as well.

Ahead of Defense Minister Ehud Barak's visit to the Pentagon this week, Israeli military sources said they were satisfied with the progress in talks with their American counterparts over acquiring F-35 fighter jets. Israel will pay $135 million per jet if it buys 25, and $100 million if it buys 75.

I support Israel wholeheartedly. But I suppose from the point of view of the Iranians, that Israel, which already possesses a nuclear arsenal, is an existential threat to Iran. We need to stop throwing alarmist rhetoric around. It is still true that wars with nuclear weapons mean mutual assured destruction. It is still true that the chief value of a nuclear weapon is in its possession and not in its use. And it is still true that every national leader on the face of the globe knows these things full well no matter what posturing they may do. We should do everything in our power to disuade Iran from continuing on its nuclear path. But let's stop pretending that their ultimate success in acquiring a nuclear weapons capacity would automaticcally triger nuclear war. And let's quit propagandizing that they are mad men who will blindly resort to nuclear warfare, because it is obvious that they are not. They have interests enimical to ours, but they will not commit national suicide for those interests because suicide means the death of national aspirations, not the beginning. What meaning for them lies in the destruction of Israel if it coincides with the destruction of Iran?

Lots of assumptions and assertions far beyond the scope of the seeded article, my fellow supporter of Israel. If you have something to say about what the seeded article brought forth, by all means comment appropriately, within the bounds of the CoH.

demo scout,

I will try to explain why Iran will NOT be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

It basically comes down to a consideration of, "What are the chances of Iran sending a nuke to Tel Aviv".

demo scout, you must agree, that IF the chances are HIGH, that Iran will send a nuke, then, Israel MUST decide that there is NO CHOICE, in that, Israel must eliminate the threat.

demo scout, I will agree, that IF the "chance" of an Iranian nuke strike is NON-EXISTENT, then, Israel SHOULD NOT bomb Iran's nuke sites.

Now, let us consider the chances, one way or the other;

Fact: an Iranian nuke strike on Tel Aviv ENDS the State of Israel. PERIOD. ONLY One nuke strike, because Israel is a VERY SMALL country.

Iran is a VERY BIG country, and they showed the world that, in the Iran/Iraq War, that Iran's leadership was WILLING to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of their people, so as NOT to lose the war to Iraq.

The ODDS are GREAT that Iran will think that it is acceptable to receive an Israeli retaliatory strike on Iran, if the Iranians THINK that their strike eliminates the hated Zionist Satanic JEWISH State of ISRAEL.

They will think that their dead Iranians are MARTYRS, and BIG Iran will survive, as the HERO in the Region.

It does NOT matter to the Iranians that there will be collateral deaths of Palestinians and other Muslims, because these Muslims will also will be GOOD MARTYRS.

SO, demo scout, given that one successful Iranian nuke strike ends Israel, and given the HIGH ODDS that Iran will see this action as a GOOD and DESIRABLE action to take; then

ISRAEL, CANNOT AND WILL NOT ALLOW IRAN TO HAVE NUKES.

Of course that will mean war.

demo scout, if you were an Israeli, you would choose war, because doing nothing probably would mean annihilation.

Hinting at differences in perceptions between the administrations in Washington and Jerusalem, Mullen said Iran's nuclear program appears "to be the No. 1 priority for Israel, and certainly it's a very high priority for us."

Israel's #1 goal is to survive, and flourish under whatever circumstances may be present.

Israel's enemies have successfully turned a small distraction into an object of worldwide proportion, and turned the world's attention away from what is really threatening the existence of every one of us...

...and they might just get away with it.

israel will not survive another 50 years. Placing a jewish state in the midst of the muslim world was foolish, and its existence cannot be sustained one its enemies gain technological parity, in the form of nuclear weapons.

america should grant a new homeland to israel, perhaps in new mexico, arizona or nevada. If they accept, they will live at peace for centuries. Barring that, israel's days are few.

That was said back in 48' as well.

surprise surprise!

Israel isn't going anywhere, best for its enemies to negotiate a peace agreement with it,and give their own people some hope for the future as well.

israel has only survived because they had superior military forces, and superior military technology. israel has already bombed nuclear facilities in iraq and syria... but iran's nuclear facilities are in multiple locations and no one thinks israel will be able to knock out all of them. At best, israel can postpone the day their enemies get nuclear arms. They cannot not do so permenantly though.

israel's days are numbered, and they will not survive another 50 years. No doubt, the world will be a more peaceful place when israel is no longer stirring up animosity among the muslim world.

Underestimating the State of Israel, the force defending this country, and the will of Israelis to live, and enjoy life.

dsanthony,

in the DREAMS of the Iranians,

they will first, obliterate, and "wipe from the pages of history", the hated "Zionist Entity".

Then, victorious Iran, will nuke Riyadh, ridding the world of the Royal Family, of their hated enemies, the Sunni Wahabbi.

They will annex the territory of the Saudis, having "wiped THEM from the pages of history".

Nuclear Iran, Now with Mecca and Medina in their possession, will DEMAND that ALL Sunni in Egypt and and the Rest of the Middle East and the Maghreb change from their wicked way, and ACCEPT,the TRUE ISLAM, their own Iranian, "Twelver Shi'ism".

Iran, KNOWING, that "DESTINY" is with them, and that ALLAH is on their side, starts the HOLY JIHAD against all non-Muslim Nations.

World War III

NO, dsanthony, NOBODY WANTS Iran to have nukes!

...AND They Shall Not!.

Take a look at newsvine. Can you imagine these rabid Israel haters standing still for an influx of jews onto american soil? Then we'd be hearing lobbying for driving them into Lake Tahoe. No, Israel has to take care of its own and I have to believe that they have some options in place even if the majority of Israel is destroyed. One thing is certain. The US government's kid glove handling of Iran will continue.

ds anthony,

I find your argument about the world being a more peaceful place without Israel just a tad specious.

Israel did not exist from 70 A.D. to 1948 A.D.

There were 1878 years without Israel. I suppose they were peaceful times?

Israel is a FREE and OPEN SOCIETY, worth defending. Its enemies are corrupt dictatorships that deny rights to their own and violate their human rights with impunity, because they know they will not be taken to task for it.

THESE are the countries that are destabilizing the world. Stop coddling them and making excuses for them.

israeli advocates are full of glowing rhetoric, but that does not change reality. When its enemies get nuclear weapons, israel will be gone. And israel cannot stop that from happening indefinitely.

I don't believe anything I said can be defined as "coddling" muslim nations. I was merely stating facts. The existence of israel, and the us support for israel, has spurred terrorism for decades. I also did not say the world would be peaceful without israel... I said it would be more peaceful. And I am correct.

dsanthony,

IF Iran gets its FANATICAL SHIA hands on nukes, they WILL USE THEM, and

you, dsanthony, will be CORRECT.

The world, after the ensuing conflagration, WILL be more peaceful.

Peaceful, yes;

inhabited by man, NO.

*To try and prevent that from happening, Iran MOST DEFINITELY will be denied the possession of nukes. And guess what, dsanthony (?) (!) . If Israel doesn't get them all in their bombings, Russia will bomb the Iranian sites and get the rest. Saudi Arabia will also send in some fighters and do some damage to their "traditional enemies" nukes.

NO COUNTRY WANTS NUKES IN IRANS POSSESSION!!!

David, I see that you live in Saly Lake City, Utah.

If you are a Mormon, would you be so kind, and indicate the CHURCH's Position on the existance of the State of Israel?

And, what is the Mormon Church's view of the "Second Coming" of Jesus?

worldknight,

possibly extended in a stretch, but

the question of Iran with nuclear weapons,

should touch on those that think that Iran should have them,

and their reasons for thinking that it would be a GOOD thing for Iran to possess nukes.

dsanthony has indicated that Iran IS a threat to Israel, but he does NOT think that Israel can defend against this threat.

I might be wrong, but, he also seems to think that there are NO OTHER COUNTRIES that want, as Israel wants, a non-nuclear Iran.
